Ways to Save: Electricity Saving Tips for Around the House

While many people are talking about an energy crisis, few are talking about the stability, security, and improved economic opportunities of cutting back. Saving electricity saves you money and improves the health of the planet. A few electricity saving tips could make your home more conservative.

Here are 3 simple solutions you could implement today.

1. Switch Your Bulbs

One of the best ways to cut down on your electricity without having to make any major changes in your life or comfort is to use better light bulbs. If you’ve still got incandescent bulbs around the house, it’s time to consider switching to fluorescent. If you’ve already switched to fluorescent bulbs, consider changing to LEDs.

Where incandescents can last a few months or a year, fluorescents last much longer, up to 5 years in some cases. LED lights can last even longer as they don’t rely on filaments or gas that can burn out.

They also run cooler when they’re on than other types of bulbs. The heat that’s being put out by your bulbs in warm weather only exacerbates the discomfort you get from heat.

2. Cool Smarter

If you’re trying to stay cool at home, especially through warmer summer months, you could be spending a lot of money running air conditioners. The bigger your home is, the more energy you’ll need and the more your air conditioner will run. Rather than running an air conditioner, you could supplement some of the cooling with fans.

If your air conditioner sits primarily in one room, you could use fans to blow the cool air to where you’ll be during the day or in the evening. Fans can create a wind tunnel that blows cool air through your home, even just by taking air from the window and moving it around.

Since fans use less electricity than air conditioners, you’ll save money fast.

3. Wash and Dry By Hand

For all of the washing and drying that you need to be done around the house, what percentage of it are you willing and able to do by hand?

The more you can do by hand, the less electricity you’ll use. If you don’t mind doing dishes by hand, you could save substantially on the water and electricity used by dishwashers.

If you don’t mind doing at least some portion of your laundry by hand, you’ll also save money. You can lower your electricity bill by always hanging your laundry out to dry in the sun.
